Home improvement and recycling – what’s the best way to get rid of replaced items?

2012/04/6464b_recycling_bins_for_home_3514441361_7e9262479a

Question by Minnesota_Slinger: Home improvement and recycling – what’s the best way to get rid of replaced items?
Recently, I just replaced the door handles and locks on our house. The locks were still in great condition, but since we recently bought the house, it was necessary to change the locks. Although I no longer have use for the locks, I don’t want to simply throw them in the trash, given that together they are several pounds of good metal. And as I do more home improvements in the future, I imagine I’ll be replacing a fair amount of items that are obsolete yet contain good material. But as far as I know, the weekly recycling bin is just for aluminum cans, newspaper, glass bottles, etc., not for doorknobs and that sort of thing. How can I get rid of this sort of stuff so that it can be recycled somehow rather than just thrown into a landfill?

What’s the proper way to dispose of batteries?

2012/04/b3690_recycling_bins_for_home_5204021460_f85c7c1b8e

Question by thatonegirl: What’s the proper way to dispose of batteries?
I know you’re not supposed to throw them in the regular trash, but I’ve heard you can recycle them somehow. Can you put them in the recycling bin at home for pick-up or do you have to take them somewhere?

Best answer:

Answer by Ard-Drui
You must take them to either pick-up points, or to Hazardous Waste centers.

Raccoon vs Green Bin.mov

2012/04/1ec22_recycling_bins_for_home_default

The City of Ottawa green bins for recycling organic waste are supposed to be impenetrable to animals. But since the spring, raccoons have been regularly busting open my bin in front of my home in Westboro and helping themselves. I know they knock the bin over first, but to find out how they opened the locking mechanism, I had to set up a video camera with infrared capability. The result: City of Ottawa, we have a problem.

Organics recycling & compost (Nine News segment 04/08/2010)

2012/03/cf388_recycling_bins_for_home_default

Recycling bins are now being distributed to some parts of Adelaide for residents to save food organics to use as compost. The bench top containers can be used to put all food organics in to it, including everything from fruit and vegetables, to meat, fish and eggs. “The great thing about this system is that it allows people to recycle their food organics at home, and then it gets used back as beautiful compost in their home garden or in vineyards or market gardens around Adelaide” says Lachlan Jeffries. If households don’t use the food scraps for their own composting system, the material can be separately collected and transported to the EPA licensed Jeffries facility for composting. Recycled food organics are then processed into a range of composts, soils and mulches. The finished products are utilised by landscape and private gardeners and horticultural farmers to reduce water loss and provide nutrient replenishment to soil, closing the loop from where the food was first produced. For more information about Jeffries compost, soil and mulch products, visit www.jeffries.com.au.

The Green Bin Program is coming… This fall the Regional District of Nanaimo and its municipal partners are bringing green bin food and kitchen waste collection to single family homes in the region. The new service will be launched on most routes over four weeks starting in mid-October 2010. Pilot Project and Current Green Bin Service Areas In October 2007 the Regional District of Nanaimo and its municipal partners launched a pilot project to provide weekly green bin food waste collection to 1985 households in Cedar, the Cilaire neighbourhood of Nanaimo, and the Chartwell neighbourhood in Qualicum Beach. Over one year, households in the pilot areas put an average of more than two kilograms of food waste in their green bins for collection each week, and 97 per cent of respondents in a survey said the program should be expanded region-wide. Households in the three pilot areas continue to receive weekly green bin food waste collection, and lead the region in solid waste diversion as the RDN prepares to expand the Green Bin program in October 2010. For more information on the pilot project and current green bin service areas click here. The next big step The Green Bin Program is the biggest step forward in residential waste management service since curbside recycling began. Curbside food waste collection completes the region’s Organics Diversion Strategy. Since 2005, the commercial/institutional sector has been sending food waste to the ICC Group composting facility at Duke

Recycling Around the World 4: Bentonville

2012/03/61847_recycling_bins_for_home_default

This is Recycling around the World from Bentonville, Arkansas. Thanks for watching this show that wants to hear from you, and Happy Earth Week everyone! What are you doing for Earth Day? Send your stories and your videos to myvideos@greenopolis.com and GreenopolisTV might highlight them in our next Recycling Around the world segment! In today’s episode we head over to Bentonville, Arkansas with Ed Begley Jr. for some green tips just in time for Earth Day. Ed Begley at the Go Green Expo advises people to do everything they can to be green. Things that are cheap and easy like get out of the car as fast as you can, walk, ride a bike when the weather permits, and take public transportation. People can also do a lot at home. Get rid of those non-energy efficient light bulbs, put in those energy-efficient models, put up some weather stripping, home gardening and composting. Recycling Around the World’s new local correspondent, Gabriela Sonnhalter, also has a great tip about recycling on the go. Gabby just got a drink of water and then needed to throw the empty water bottle in the trash. There were no recycling bins around the place so she walked all the way down the road where there’s a bin so she could recycle. She hopes to encourage all the kids, all over the world, and parents to recycle. Remember to hold on to your containers until you do find a recyling bin to throw it into. GreenopolisTV has more highlights from the eco twins, Tristin and Tyler from New York who went to
