I was looking for information on their websites and they don’t go into much detail. They both claim to reuse or refurbish the mobiles sent to them as much as possible but I am interested to know what happens when they cannot reuse or refurbish them. They claim to recycle the phones but I was wondering if anyone knows where these recycling facilities are. Are the phones recycled here in the UK or sent abroad to China or Nigeria?
I know what they do with the parts (thanks). What I am curious about is whether the phones are disassembled in the UK or in another country.

The ones that are almost new/work perfectly are sold on to 3rd party markets. Nigeria and Asia are the most likely destinations.
The majority of the phone’s they receive however are recycled. They are completely dismantled and the innards are extracted.
Most phones contain tiny amounts of precious metals such as gold, copper, silver, nickel, they alre extract the silicone data chips, and the anything else that’s useful. These components are then very often sold to the very companies that manufacture mobile phones (amongst other things).
This is why those recycling companies don’t care if the phone’s they receive are in working order or not.

Saving the planet: Nokia pushes for recycling of mobile phones
www.ntv.co.ke As the much talked about Global Climate Change Summit begins in Copenhagen, Denmark, leading mobile phones manufacturer Nokia is pushing for recycling of mobile phones and electronics as a move that will considerably reduce global warming. Nokia officials argue that if everyone who owns a phone recycled just one old or spoilt phone, 240000 tonnes of raw material would be generated thus eliminating the need to expend energy to extract new materials from the earth. Kaara Wainaina, who is in Cairo, Egypt, has some more details on how recycling of mobile phones can help turn down the heat.

…And, why does it seem that none of the companies that advertise on the web will say how much they actually pay for phones? The ink cartridge recycling places tell how much they give, so why can’t the phone companies? Am I going to have to try each one of them in order to know who pays the most and has the best customer service?

Don’t expect to get more than $ 2-3 for one. These companies are actually trying to get them for free as a “service” to you for disposing of a potentially toxic product.
