Question by luvcollies:): How do you recycle used alkaline batteries?
Is there a place to send them through the mail? I’m pretty sure that I don’t have a place to send them nearby.

Thanks!

You could burn them, thereby heating your house.

Question by Mike Shermy: Can you recycle alkaline batteries for money?
One recycling center actually charges to take batteries and the other does not pay. Is this typical? I have TONS of dead batteries laying around and am hoping to make a few bucks. Thank you in advance for your answers :)

Question by Lulu: can i recycle my alkaline batteries at best buy?
you know how best buy has that recycle center or whatever? theres like different boxes for cell phones and i think game controllers and things like that. theres also a box for batteries, and i was gonna bring a bunch of my batteries to recycle but when i told my dad i was going he said that i could only recycle rechargeable batteries.
so should i just throw away my regular alkaline batteries? because i thought that they might leak some kind of chemical or something……….

Answer by Richard Karn
No I’m pretty sure they only take the rechargable. maybe try with just a couple ask them
yeah when a battery is dead it means that the sulfuric acid in it has pretty muched dried up but
the only risk is them leaking but that wouldn’t happen unless they were somehow cut or crushed

Alkaline batteries headed to the recycling box after ‘powering’ up our campus student response clickers…we go through so many batteries trying to keep all of our tech tools working. Cursory research, though, indicates that these batteries no longer recycle and are put in landfills like other trash! Some of our devices use rechargeable batteries and though that may be better for the planet, they come with their own problems. It is so difficult to balance our electronic expectations and other modern world conveniences with the need to reduce the carbon footprint and protect the extraordinary planet on which we live. Question by Lynn W: Why does it cost so much to properly recycle alkaline batteries?
I can only find drop-off locations for rechargeable batteries. I’ve found two places online where you buy a box (cheapest I found was $ 27), then ship them the batteries off. I want to do the right thing, but paying to throw something away just rubs me the wrong way. Am I being cheap? I guess I’ll try and just buy rechargeable from now on.

Recharge Your Batteries

2011/09/fe178_recycle_alkaline_batteries_default

Don’t throw your Alkaline Batteries away, recharge them… James Bond Style!

Brain cells come and brain cells go, but fat cells live forever. According to the Mountain Equipment Coop (MEC) allegedly around `12 billion small household batteries cause up to 70 percent of all heavy metals in landfills. Virtually none of them are recycled, except for this activity. When alkaline batteries are collected in a Battery Drive, they may just end up buried in a landfill farther away.
