M&S Shwopping – Joanna Lumley Interview – Marks and Spencer 2012
Join the shwopping revolution at www.facebook.com We’re starting a fashion revolution. It’s called shwopping. Interview with Joanna: I’m excited by the idea of shwopping. It’s about getting customers to recycle unwanted clothes every time they shop at M&S. Bring in something old, buy something new. Swap and shop. You see the thing about shopping or, kind of going shopping, a lot of people use it as something…a kind of feeling of a change in their life, they want a change, they want something to happen. You know you’ve bought something, you don’t really need more of it. But if you’ve got rid of something, nature abhors a vacuum – so you feel you’ve got to buy something. Well that’s brilliant on the retail side of it, because it means that you give something away and you automatically want to feel rewarded. Tragic. You know when it’s time to shwop. The idea that you haven’t hoarded, you’ve simply exchanged – you’ve simply shwopped, I think it’s brilliant. Very exciting. So the whole sense of bringing stuff back to M&S is not alien, you’re quite used to coming into M&S with a bag because it might be something that you want to exchange for a different size, or somebody has given you something in a colour that doesn’t suit you and you want to swap it for another thing. To people coming into M&S with stuff, this is something that is a tradition already. I want shwopping to become as normal as – really, like putting a bottle in a bottle bank. The idea that throwing things away …

Join the revolution at www.facebook.com We’re starting a fashion revolution. It’s called shwopping. Shwopping means no more waste. Shwopping means no clothes to landfill. Everytime you go to buy something new, take something old. We want to take the lead as a big company to say come in, take your garments form your house and start shwopping. Today’s filming we’re here in Brick Lane on this old Truman Brewery they have rigged up just under 10000 garments which we’ve clad up on the walls, we’ve wrapped around the trees, we’ve put round the benches, we’ve even made a dog out of clothes. 10000 garments, which represents 5 minutes of clothes that go to landfill. It’s absolutely shocking to think of how much we throw away. If you see that, that’s actually rather embarassing so we should stop that and we should make sure that we create a world for the future where people are going to either reuse or recycle what we buy. You come to us, you’re not only coming for your shop – you’re coming to shwop and that is, I think the new trend that we want to set. This is the big launch of the huge idea of shwop drop, which is to go into your M&S with clothes that needn’t be from M&S, any old clothes that you don’t wear anymore, drop them in and those clothes will all go to Oxfam. We’ve been working with Marks & Spencer for several years, particularly with clothes exchange. People bring the clothes in, they get their voucher – go to Marks. Now this is an extension of that and it’s even more …
What is the best way to recycle clothes hangers?
Question by : What is the best way to recycle clothes hangers?
My family has several clothes hangers and my husband insists that we should just keep on throwing them away (I think we may have already thrown away over 750 hangers this year alone) can I recycle them or should I just keep throwing clothes hangers away.

Take them to goodwill or Salvation army stores. When I was in school I used to work for Goodwill, and we’d always need hangers!
Cheers!

Making new clothes from old clothes… Recycling clothes project??? Help!?
Question by : Making new clothes from old clothes… Recycling clothes project??? Help!?
I am supposed to get some old jean shorts or tee shirts from my closet and make something new out of them. Like making a tee shirt into a purse, or something like that. Have any ideas??
I really appreciate it!

I know someone who once made a denim jacket out of an old pair of jeans.
You could make something simpler such as a cushion cover (two squares of fabric).

Is there way to recycle old clothes that are too worn out to be re-used?
Question by Bronwyn26: Is there way to recycle old clothes that are too worn out to be re-used?
I have never heard of recycling old clothes or fabric, but it would be great if there was such a thing. I am talking about things like old cotton t-shirts, socks, underwear, etc. that are worn out and full of holes. After all, you can only keep so many to use as rags. I sometimes save worn out denim to use in sewing projects, but it seems like such a waste to toss other stuff into a landfill.
Wow, you guys have a lot of great ideas! I love the rug idea.

Long ago before we were so modern and a throw away society, nothing went to waste. We took old material of any sort, cut it into strips and made braided rugs. They were colorful, quaint and useful. Small children and pets loved to lay on them.
