What is a good camera for an amateur photographer?

Every year for Christmas I ask for a camera. Every year, I’ve gotten an old hand-me-down digital camera. I’ve always hated the way the pictures look.
I am completely clueless on what kind of camera to buy. I know I want something that will take a higher quality photo, I’ve been looking into the Canon 400D SLR.
I’m looking for something in the 400-500 dollar range.
Can someone please suggest a good semi-professional camera for someone who is tired of cheap recycled digital cameras?

Try the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi or the Nikon D3100. Great entry-level DSLRs. You should start off with a tripod and a good wide-angle or zoom lens.

Flash units “recycle”.
There are two features you may be talking about
* one could be what is called “Continuous Drive” measured in frames per second (fps)
* the other could be what is called “Shutter Lag”; how long it is between the time you press the shutter release and the cameras shutter actuates. On point and shoot cameras this can be as short as 0.8 second without flash up to two minutes when using a flash. DSLR cameras are known for the shortest shutter lag. Those are measured in milliseconds.
